What are the various types of gold in jewelry?
There are various gold colors, gold karats and gold plating options.
Gold Colors
Gold jewelry is not pure gold. It is usually an alloy: a mixture of metals. Gold jewelry can be alloyed with copper, nickel, palladium and zinc. These alloys can create several beautiful gold color combinations and variations. The most common gold colors are: yellow, white, rose and green (rarely sold).
Yellow gold is made by mixing pure gold with silver, copper and zinc. It is the purest color and the most hypo-allergenic. It also requires the least maintenance of all gold colors.
White gold is made by mixing pure gold and platinum or palladium. White gold is more durable ans scratch-resistant than yellow gold. It is also more affordable than yellow gold and platinum.
Rose gold is made by mixing pure gold with copper and silver. Rose gold is usually the least expensive of the gold colors, due to its use of inexpensive copper (which gives it the rose color). Rose gold is the most durable of the three colors, due to its copper content.
